Be free

Freedom in Christ means more than just being free from sin; it also means being free from the Law and even from our own self-centered desires. Yet, to experience this freedom fully, we need to recognize the "rival loves" that vie for the space only Christ should occupy in our hearts. These rival loves include desires, passions, and distractions that compete for our attention and shift our focus away from putting Christ above all. Identifying these forces in our lives is essential if we are to live as Christ intends—free and fully devoted to Him.

Jesus calls each of us into a relationship that is not only deep but also exclusive. Just as He loved us sacrificially and freed us completely, He desires that we respond by living in freedom through continuous renewal in His love. However, distractions are everywhere. From the demands of daily life to even good things that become obsessions, anything can transform into a rival love if it begins to occupy the space that should belong to Christ. This is why Jesus’s call is more than an invitation; it is a transformative way of life that demands we examine our hearts honestly.

The distractions of the modern world can pull us away from the centrality of Christ in ways that feel subtle at first. Our hearts are often drawn toward career ambitions, relationships, financial goals, or even the pursuit of personal happiness. While these may not inherently be sinful, they can easily morph into rival loves if they dominate our priorities. When we allow such pursuits to eclipse our devotion to Christ, we may think we are still "free" in Him, but in reality, we become enslaved to the very things we prioritize above His presence.

True freedom in Christ does not equate to simply avoiding sin; it means experiencing a life free from the weight of self-centeredness and worldly distractions. Christ Himself is our model for this freedom. He not only loved and served others but did so with complete dedication to God’s purpose. Just as He fully devoted His life to us, He asks for our undivided commitment in return. When we put Christ first, we reflect a life that is not only free but also fruitful, marked by love, service, and joy. To place Him at the center is to step into a freedom that no worldly ambition or temporary satisfaction can match.

When we allow Christ to be the sole focus of our lives, we are free to live out of love rather than duty. This freedom is not only transformative but also a reflection of His love through us. We live freely not by dismissing earthly responsibilities but by fulfilling them in a way that glorifies Him. With Christ as our priority, we find ourselves energized to live purposefully. We engage in our responsibilities with new perspective, liberated from the endless cycle of self-focused achievement and freed to serve with a heart full of gratitude.

One day, every knee will bow, and every heart will acknowledge Christ as the highest, as the One above all. But we are given the chance to live that reality now by keeping Him at the center of our lives. Living free in Christ is not about escaping responsibilities but aligning them with His eternal purpose. It’s about choosing to serve out of love and letting go of rival loves that keep us bound.

Are you living in this freedom? Have you surrendered your heart fully to Christ, free from rival loves and distractions? True freedom is found in yielding completely to His love, allowing Him to direct your life and keeping Him at the center of everything you do.
